A flat wash is one even tone across the paper. A graded wash moves from dark to light in one direction. Both are laid on tilted paper with a loaded brush, one stroke at a time, and neither should be corrected once the sheen has gone.
How do I lay a flat or graded watercolor wash without streaks?
Mix more paint than you think you need. A wash fails when the brush runs dry halfway across the sheet, so load a large round or a flat with a puddle that drips. Tilt the board about 15 degrees toward you. Work left to right for a right-handed painter, right to left for a left-handed one, so the hand never crosses wet paper.
For a flat wash, lay a horizontal band, then reload and lay the next band so its lower edge touches the top of the bead left by the first. Do not go back. The bead carries the pigment down the sheet. At the bottom, lift the bead with a dry brush or a paper towel. The result is one tone with no overlap marks.
For a graded wash, load the brush with strong color for the first band, then dip the tip in clean water for each following band. The pigment dilutes as you descend. Keep the board tilted so the bead keeps moving. If a band dries before the next arrives, a hard line forms and cannot be removed.
Streaks come from three causes: too little water in the mix, a brush dragged back into a drying band, and paper that has begun to dry unevenly. The fix is to work faster, mix wetter, and stop touching. A wash is a single pass. Corrections belong to the next layer, not to this one.

What is glazing in watercolor and how do I build depth in layers?
Glazing is the application of a transparent wash over a fully dry layer. The underlying color shows through the new one, and the two mix optically. This is how watercolor builds depth without opaque paint. It is also how a painting turns muddy if the layers are wrong.
Three rules govern glazing. First, each layer must be bone dry. A damp layer lifts under the next brush and the two colors mix on the paper instead of in the eye. Second, each layer must be transparent. A pigment with body, such as an opaque earth or a white, hides what is below and kills the glow. Third, the layers must be few. Two or three transparent washes give more depth than six.
Pigment choice matters here. Phthalo blue, quinacridone rose, and the transparent yellows glaze well. Cadmiums, cerulean, and most earths are semi-opaque and sit on top rather than over. A limited palette of six or eight transparent pigments covers most subjects and keeps the layers clean.
To build depth, start with the lightest wash and the largest shapes. Let it dry. Add the middle values in a second glaze, then the darks in a third. Each layer should be slightly smaller than the one below, so the edges of the earlier washes remain visible as soft transitions. This is the opposite of painting everything at full strength and then trying to lighten it, which watercolor does not allow.
A glaze over a glaze of the same hue deepens the color. A glaze over a glaze of the complementary hue neutralizes it. That second case is the source of most muddy passages, and it is worth understanding before the next section.
Why does my watercolor turn muddy, and how do I fix hard edges and blooms?
Mud is a value problem before it is a color problem. When three or more pigments mix on the paper, or when a complementary pair is overworked, the result loses chroma and reads as gray-brown. The paper is no longer visible through the paint, so the light that gives watercolor its glow is gone.
Mud has four common causes. Overmixing on the paper rather than in the palette. Glazing a wet layer, which lifts pigment and stirs it. Using too many pigments in one passage. And painting a dark over a light before the light is dry. Each has a fix. Mix on the palette. Wait for dry. Limit the passage to two or three pigments. And plan the order: light to dark, large to small, wet to dry.
Hard edges appear when a wash dries with a defined boundary. Sometimes this is wanted, as on a roof line or a horizon. When it is not, the cause is usually a wash that was left to dry with a bead at its edge, or a stroke made into a drying area. The fix is to soften the edge while it is still damp, with a clean damp brush drawn along the boundary, or to leave it and glaze over it later with a wash that covers the transition.
Blooms, also called backruns or cauliflowers, form when wet paint flows into a drying area and pushes pigment outward. They are caused by adding paint to a half-dry wash, by a drop of water landing on damp paper, or by a brush that is wetter than the surface. Some painters use blooms deliberately for clouds and foliage texture. To avoid them, keep the whole wash at the same degree of wetness, and never touch a drying passage.
If a bloom has already formed and is unwanted, let it dry completely, then lift it with a clean damp brush and blot. On cotton paper, most of the pigment will come up. On wood pulp paper, some will stain. This is one reason cotton paper is preferred for work that requires correction.
How do you practice these three skills without wasting paper?
Set up a sheet divided into squares. In the first row, lay four flat washes of one pigment at four dilutions. In the second, lay four graded washes, each from dark to light. In the third, glaze two transparent pigments in three layers and note the color at each stage. In the fourth, deliberately cause a bloom and then lift it.
Label each square with the pigment, the dilution, and the paper. A small notebook beside the board does the same job. Over a few sessions, the notes become a personal reference for how each pigment behaves in a wash, how it glazes, and how it fails.
This is the same discipline as an observing log. The point is not the finished square but the record of what the materials did under known conditions. Watercolor rewards the painter who knows the medium's behavior before the subject demands it.
What order should the layers follow in a simple painting?
A workable order for a landscape or a still life runs in five stages. First, the lightest washes over the largest shapes, laid flat or graded as the subject requires. Second, a middle-value glaze over the areas that need it, once the first is dry. Third, the darks, applied with a drier brush and a smaller shape. Fourth, the accents, which are the darkest marks and the sharpest edges. Fifth, the lifts, where a damp brush removes paint to recover a highlight.
Each stage waits for the one before it. The temptation is to rush the darks, and the result is mud. The painter who waits keeps the transparency of the early layers and the depth of the late ones. That contrast, between the glow of the paper and the weight of the final darks, is what watercolor does better than any other medium. A wash that turns muddy usually fails for a reason a painter can name: too many layers, a brush that lifts pigment, or water that dries before the next pass.
