Dark Swords is an English-language MMORPG developed by High Tower. A player who wants to read its weapons as more than damage numbers can start with the historical record of European swords: typology, forge practice, and conservation. That record is documentary, not game design, and it answers different questions than a stat table does.

What Dark Swords Is, and What It Is Not

Dark Swords is a browser-based, text-heavy MMORPG run by High Tower. Play is turn-based and menu-driven: you pick a location, spend turns, fight, gather, trade, and level. The sword in the interface is a set of numbers, a name, and a price. It has no weight in the hand and no edge geometry.

That is not a defect. It is the nature of the format. A text game can carry hundreds of item names cheaply, and it does. The names often borrow from medieval European vocabulary: falchion, broadsword, sabre, claymore, estoc. Which Sword Types Appear in the Game's Vocabulary?

The game's item names draw on a wide medieval and early modern vocabulary. The historical record sorts that vocabulary in three ways.

Oakeshott's typology runs from type X to type XXII. It describes blade form, cross-section, and the transition from the Viking-age sword to the late medieval longsword. A type X is broad and lenticular with a wide fuller. A type XV is narrow and acutely pointed. A type XVIII has a hollow-ground diamond section. The labels are descriptive, not evaluative.

For the longsword proper, the working range is roughly 1350 to 1550. Grip proportions matter here: a two-hand grip needs enough length for both hands, and the pommel and cross form a lever system. A game that lists a two-handed sword and a one-handed sword as separate items is repeating a real distinction, even if the numbers attached to it are invented.

Viking-age swords are classified by Petersen, Wheeler, and Geibig. These schemes overlap and disagree in places. Petersen's types are the older and more widely cited. Geibig's work refines the chronology. A player who reads one scheme and then another learns something useful about the field: classification is a tool, not a fact of nature.

What the Forge Record Adds

The forge side is where the game's language gets most misleading, and where the record is most useful.

Before industrial production, iron and steel were made in small batches with variable carbon content. Pattern welding, the folding and stacking of iron and steel bars, produced visible bands in the blade. It was a technique with a structural purpose and a visual result. The pattern was not decoration applied to the surface; it was the surface.

Crucible steel and wootz are a separate line of development. Wootz steel, made in South Asia, cooled slowly to form a banded carbide structure. The resulting watered pattern is distinct from pattern welding, though the two are often confused in popular writing. A game that uses the word damascus for both is following a common modern usage, not a historical one.

Heat treatment is the other half. A blade is hardened by heating and quenching, then tempered to reduce brittleness. The register describes tempering and drawing in four heats, a schedule that trades hardness against toughness. A sword that is too hard chips. A sword that is too soft bends and stays bent. The balance is the point.

None of this changes how a turn-based fight resolves. It changes what the item name means when you read it.

How Do You Care for a Sword Collection?

Conservation is the part of the record with the most practical transfer to a player's own habits, even if the player owns no swords.

Rust is the primary enemy. It forms where moisture sits: under the guard, along the fuller, at the point where the blade meets the hilt. Fingerprints are a real problem because skin oils and salts deposit on steel and begin corrosion at the contact points. Handling a blade with bare hands leaves a mark that may not show for days.

Humidity control is the standard answer. Stable relative humidity, no rapid swings, and storage that allows air to move around the object. Public collections in Europe follow these rules and publish their methods. A collector with one sword can follow the same logic at smaller scale: dry, stable, and handled with gloves.

The register includes a glossary of forty-six terms covering anatomy and metallurgy. Terms like tang, fuller, ricasso, ferrule, and distal taper appear there. A player who learns them reads item descriptions differently, because the words stop being flavor text and start naming parts.

Why Does a Player Care About Any of This?

A player cares for the same reason a reader of historical fiction cares about the period. The game is a text environment. Most of what it gives you is words. Words that name real objects carry more weight when you know what the objects were.

There is also a practical benefit. Item lists in long-running games accumulate names from many sources, some medieval, some Victorian, some invented for the game. A player who knows the difference can tell which names belong to a coherent tradition and which are pastiche. That is a small skill, but it is the same skill a museum visitor uses when reading a label.

The register is explicit about its audience: amateurs, collectors, and readers of historical sources looking for a verifiable base. That is a modest claim, and it is the right one. It does not promise to explain the game. It explains the swords.

What the Game Cannot Tell You

A text MMORPG cannot convey weight, balance, or edge geometry. It cannot show you how a blade flexes under load or how a grip feels after an hour. Those are properties of physical objects, and they are the reason the historical record exists in the form it does: measured, catalogued, and photographed.

What the game can do is put a name in front of you repeatedly. Repetition is how vocabulary sticks. A player who sees the same sword type across dozens of item tiers has a reason to look it up. The record is there when that happens.

The useful habit is to treat the game's item names as prompts rather than descriptions. A prompt sends you to a reference. A description claims to be complete. The first is a starting point. The second is usually wrong.

Dark Swords is a game about turns, numbers, and progression. The historical record of European swords is about objects that were made, used, damaged, repaired, and preserved. The two do not need to agree. They only need to be read side by side, with the game on one side and the record on the other.
